*** Update on Hilton's 24 Hour HGV Ban ***

Dear Fellow Hiltonians

Great news, I have been speaking with CCC and they have confirmed that all the new signs informing drivers of the 7.5T 24/7 Weight Restriction TRO along the B1040 are now in place for all vehicles approaching Hilton from any direction, so there should be no excuses for HGVs to be traveling through the village (unless they are delivering or picking up from a premises withing the restricted area)

A few weeks ago I informed the hauliers who most frequently use the road that the restriction should be in place from this weekend, and had a positive response from each of them and have just updated them that it is now in force. I have also informed the major Sat Nav vendors and map providers that the road restriction is now in place, so hopefully that will propagate over time through their updates.

We will be monitoring the situation, but as mentioned below, it is unlikely that the police or trading standards will carry out much enforcement, so to that end I am asking you to report any HGVs that you see traveling through the village (a simple rule of thumb is that if they have more than 2 axles (although some larger 2 axle vehicles are over 7.5T especially if they have double wheels on the rear axle) then they will have a registered weight of more than 7.5T) To make this effective we have to all help please. It is very much in our hands. Please do let me know if you can help out with monitoring the road, either via HGV Watch or informally.

A simple guide to identifying vehicle weights can be found here: (Simplified Guide to Lorry Types and Weights)

I have been talking with the police and they have provided me with a constable who will help with the early stages of enforcement, when we need to get the message around to the hauliers and drivers, a few tickets issued will certainly do that.

SpeedWatch, as you know, is still active and they will also be reporting any HGVs passing during their sessions to the police.

If possible can you send to us the following information of any observed HGVs to Hilton Action on Traffic (HAT) at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

  • Registration number
  • Date and Time
  • Description (including any logos, colour, make, hauliers names etc)
  • Photograph

And I will contact the haulier and try to understand why their vehicle was here. This has been very successful in the past with the night time restriction. In the past  they have been very supportive, indeed suspending drivers and contractors who flout the restriction (and law!).

Last week 1212 vehicles over 12 metres long travelled through the village, now I know not all of those would be contravening the weight restriction (for example tractors with trailers, HGVs delivering or picking up with the restriction area and busses in service) however the vast majority would, so it will be interesting to see how that changes over the next few weeks.

I am happy to try and answer and questions that you may have

Many thanks

County Broadband Hilton Initiative

As many of you know County Broadband are planning to install a Fibre Optic Broadband infrastructure (FTTP) in Hiton if they can get enough people to sign up to an installation contract.

I have put together a Q&A that you may find useful HERE

For those of you who were unable to attend the County Broadband meeting at the village hall last night, I recorded a video of the session that you may find useful and also attached a copy of the presentation that Cameron gave. Happy to try and answer any questions. Andy Bush, CCC Hilton Broadband Champion.
